The match between India and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup had its share of moments when the match looked in balance. There were also moments when the match looked in India’s favor and at times, Sri Lanka was the favorites. Ultimately, it was Sri Lanka who won the thriller in the last over of the match.

The missed opportunity of Kumar Sangakkara’s stumping

Stand-in wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik failed to stump Kumar Sangakkara out. The Sri Lankan southpaw then went on to score a brilliant hundred to guide his team to a thrilling win. Had Dinesh Karthik managed to send Kumar back, India could have got a good grasp on the match. Sangakkara was the last man out, but not before ensuring that he had taken his team to safety.

Sangakkara scored 103 runs and incidentally got out off the very next ball. He scored the runs in a quick fire 84 balls with 12 fours and a six.

The non-performance of the opening pair

The opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma has failed to find the rhythm going that they had found in the previous year. Both of them seem to have been sorted out, especially, Rohit Sharma. The way he plays doesn’t look like he is the one who stroked a double century in ODIs in 2013 against Australia. He scored 13 runs and faced 28 balls in the process with just one four – a strike rate of less than 50.

India’s fielding

India’s fielding need to improve. Shikhar Dhawan, who is generally a good fielder, let go ball under him when Sangakkara hit the balls towards the boundary. This misfielding gave Sri Lanka three more runs and Sangakkara reached 103 runs. Though, this proved to be a blessing in disguise as Sangakkara got out immediately.

Shikhar Dhawan dropped Perera, which was an easy catch. Sri Lanka were eight down at that moment and a wicket at that stage could have turned the match on its head. Though India could not have won the game, as Sri Lanka needed just one run to win, there was a possibility of a tie in that case.
