“Yeh dosti hum nahin thodenga” – a trendsetter song of Sholay that gave new definitions to Bollywood. Earlier too, Bollywood has told many friendship stories – Sangham, Mere mehbood, Arzoo etc But it was through Sholay that friendship songs really became popular. Single exception is songs of Dosti which gave first Filmfare to LP. So, let us observe which songs can be regarded as the best friendship songs of Bollywood.

Yeh dosti hum nahin thodenga – As I have already told, nothing more to explain. The tale of two friends – Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan with the voice of Kishore Da and Manna Dey.

Chahoonga mein tujhe and Mere dosti mera pyar – The songs of Dosti gave the big break to Laxmikanth – Pyarelal as music directors. This film too, was the story of two friends and was a box office hit too.

Dil chahta Hai – A tale of three friends, Aamir Khan, Akshay Khanna and Saif Ali Khan was one of the biggest hits of 2001 and a trendsetter movie too.

Diye jalte hain – Everyone says a lot about the envy and professional conflict between first two superstars of Bollywood. This particular song from Namak Haram reminds us that, they both can tell the story of friendship as well.

Tere jaisa yaar kahan – Can anyone forget this ‘Yarana’ song? Amjad Khan has been known most his villain roles. This particular movie showed us, another talent of this great actor of silver screen.

Yaari hai imaan mera – Through this movie, Pran emerged as one of the greatest character artists of 1970’s. Zanjeer was one such movie that gave instant stardom to Big B.

Salamat rahe dostana – Dostana itself is a story of friendship. The song pictured on Big B and Shatrughnan Sinha was one of the most memorable friendship songs of early 1980’s.

Yaarom dosti badi – This song from Rockfort has been released as album and has been used for Fame Gurukul contestants. Truly a lovely song of friendship!

Yeh ladka hai – Till now, I told the stories of friends belonging to same sex. This song from Kuch kuch hota hai is of course, an exception. This movie gave new definition to friendship, perhaps the movie after Meine pyar kiya.

Aaya mausam dosti kaa – Meine Pyar kiya. How can I forget this friendship song of Salman Khan and Bhagyasree if I have already mentioned about this movie a few moments ago?

Dost dost na raho – I am not sure if I can include this heartbreaking song in the list. But can a discussion of friendship stories be completed without taking the name of blockbuster ‘Sangham’?

Mere naseeb mein e dost of Do raaste, Mustafa Mustafa of Duniya dilwalom ki, Qurbani title track, Imli ka boota of Saudagar and Jaane na denge of 3 Idiots are also worth mentioning. So, I am concluding with an end note. I have noticed that Amitabh Bachchan has been frequently featured in friendship songs of Bollywood. Decades have passed since Sholay, Yarana, Namak haram and Dostana were released. Yet still they remain as the best friendship songs of Bollywood. Am I not right?
