Tile Roofs - Latest Fashion Of Kerala Homes

Before 25 years or so, concrete buildings completely conquered leaf-roofs and tile-roofs. But the main problem of concrete buildings is excess heat. But very soon, we have seen a sudden come back of tile roofs – particularly in Kottayam and Ernakulam districts. Tiles are fixed on top of concrete roofs to give Kerala-traditional structure to two storied concrete buildings. If same process is done beneath the roof also, i.e. on the ceiling of every room, the heat inside the home reduces considerably. But it adds total expenditure of construction too. Tile roofs are effective in preventing leakage of concrete buildings too. It reduces the expansion of metal strips used for roof concretes, thus protecting the building.

While you choose tiles for your roofs

Tiles are of two types – made from clay and soil powder. In traditionally made tiles, clay is used. Its colour and texture give a distinct look to roofs too. It has less-finish and more weight. But it is strong and durable. Though the tiles made from soil have good finish and are attractive, they are not durable as clay tiles. Normal workers can easily identify these two tiles. As availability of clay is scarce nowadays, soil tiles are most available in markets of Kerala now.

The sound produced by tiles when given a knock determines the strength and its durability. Noting its weight also, one can identify the quality of tiles. It is categorized into 6 grades according to quality. Best quality ranks first grade. They are categorized according to the defects and bend formed during their manufacture. Tiles may differ in design – Spanish, Dutch, Mangalore, Archana or Dolphin. It’s available in different sizes in blue, green and maroon colours. Tiles are given colours using porcelain coating. It can be given tile shield furnish once work is completed. In addition to normal tiles, glass tiles and corner tiles are also required for roofing.

Tiles can be chosen – polished or rough. They needed to be painted once in 3-4 years – the only maintenance needed. Buy tiles of one batch for construction so that they are uniform. If possible buy a few spare tiles too. In case you need a repair, you can make use of those tiles.
