Those Disappearing Wing Flaps!

Many birds that were common in our villages before 2 decades have disappeared from screens right now! A few very rare birds are still missing! A lot of birds are still in endangered list. Let us know about a few among them, found in Kerala.

Black and Orange Flycatcher – One among the 16 birds seen only in Western Ghats! They are seen most in ever green forests and they are very rare to see. Their body is orange colour, except head and wings. Head and wings are black in males and grey in females. Feathers beneath their body are also grey in colour. Their beak is small and flat.

Black (King) Vulture/Red headed Vulture – These birds are found only in Wyanad district of Kerala. Their number is also fewer. Head and neck are dark red in colour and on two ears red skin hangs like two red earrings. Their beaks are strong and curved. Fingers have long nails and they have good eye sight. They feed on eggs of other birds, rabbits and rats.

White backed Vulture – They are not seen anywhere nowadays, almost extinct! Among all vultures seen in Kerala, they are the smallest. They have good eye sight and their colour is blackish grey. It’s very rare to see them in ground. While they fly, it’s seems they are floating in water. Open forest areas are their destinations and feed on other birds, hare and eggs. They are good scavengers of earth.

Indian spotted eagle – They are most commonly seen in trees near lake sides. They are fat and round in shape, but wings are big. There is a good gap between their upper and lower beaks comparing other eagles. Their body is dark coffee brown with slight colour changes in wings. They always travel alone and catch fishes as well.

Darter – They are commonly seen at Thekkady. They have the size of a small eagle, but commonly seen near lake sides. Their beaks are sharp like knife and it’s a spectacular sight to watch them with spread wings when they sit on trees under the sun.

Indian vulture – They are vultures belonging to endangered species. They are grey in colour, but head and neck are black. Occasionally they are seen in yellow coloured head and neck.

Blanford’s Laughingthrush – They are seen in Western Ghats only and are very beautiful. Now they are seen in ever green forests of Kerala. Their eye brows are white, throat, stomach and breast are grey. Lower body is pale orange and upper body, blackish grey in colour.
