East India Company Enters in India for the purpose of trade, but later they start gaining power in the Indian region. They fought many fights with various kings of India. And then the time comes, when a major revolt took place and was known as the first war of Indian Independence. The first war of Indian independence that took place in 1857 is also known as the Sepoy rebellion or the Sepoy mutiny. Initially the nomenclature of first war of independence was popularised by Vinayak Savarkar in his Marathi book “The history of the war of Indian Independence”. The first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru insisted on using the term of First War of Independence and this was adopted by the Indian government.

This event changed the power and control of East India Company to Britain Empire. The first war of independence started with the mutiny of sepoy of East India Company on May 10, 1857, in Merut and later largely confined to the place of upper Gangetic plane and central India. This war posed a threat to company power. The other regions of the company power like Begnal, Bombay and Mardras Presidency were remaining calm during the war. The war end with the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. The power of India comes in British hand and they reorganise the army, administration and financial system of India.

Some Punjabis insist that the Anglo Sikh War from 1845 to 1846 should be considered as the first war of independence. In 2007, they protested the commemoration of the 150^th anniversary of the revolt take place in 1857. Some south Indian historians and people also opposed this term as they considered that there were several anti-British uprising taken place before 1857 in South India and those war should be considered as the first war of Indian Independence.

Some famous writers also opposed this nomenclature as they think that none of the armed up rise against British was not of national level as they are confined to a region that is why they should be considered as the war of independence.
