The Fruitful Association Of Nasir Hussain With Asha Parekh In The 1960s

After working in a few movies as a child artist, the teenager Asha Parekh was to debut big screen in the adult actress role with the movie, Goonj Uthi Shehnai in 1959. But she was rejected by its director Vijay Bhatt stating that she is too immature and not a star material for playing the lead role, which later went to Ameeta. The very next day, film director Nasir Hussain and producer Subodh Mukherjee cast her as the heroine in Dil Deke Dekho. She played lead role opposite romantic here Shammi Kapoor, who was a struggling actor then. The rest is history! The movie went on to become a huge hit in 1959 and made both its leading actors, the new stars of Bollywood.

Asha’s real life story is nothing short of a film story or fairy tale. After the success of her first movie, she had a long term association with Nasir Hussain and played his lead heroine in 6 movies. All the movies were huge hits with some chartbuster songs as well. Dil deke dekho, Baharon Ke Sapne, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Teesri Manzil, Pyar Ka Mausam, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai and Caravan are those huge hits which made Asha the highest paid actress of Bollywood in the 1960s. No doubt some of her big hits were directed by Nasir Hussain.

Though she played glamorous roles in those movies, she gave her best and exhibited her dancing skills through movies like Phir wohi dil laya hoon. She is one among those rare female artists of the industry who successfully delivered consecutive hits. She earned the title "Jubilee Girl" following a series of ruling hits at box office. O mere sona re of Teesri Manzil, Aaja piya and Kya jaanu sajan of Baharon ke sapne, Nisulthana re and Na ja o mere humdum of Pyar ke Mausam or Kitna pyara waada of Caravan – how many golden songs of Asha Parekh’s career have been given by Hussain movies!

Asha was made a big star of the industry by Nasir Hussain and though she took a break from acting in the mid-1970s she continued her association with Hussain as a film producer. It was also rumoured that she was offered the lead role in Yaadon ki Baarat, which later went to Zeenat Aman, which made her a huge star. Asha was busy with her world tour that time, promoting Indian classical dancing forms. In those days there were rumours that she was romantically involved with already married Nasir Hussain. A day before his death in 2002, he had a brief talk with the actress and most recently in 2012 his family attended her 70th birthday celebrations.
