Jason Bourne, our protagonist wakes up on a sea shore and realizes that he has lost his memory and is soon plagued by flashbacks which suggest that he was a specially trained spy. The Bourne identity was and still is a beginning of one of the most technically proficient, intelligent and visually breathtaking action movie series ever filmed. It all begins with this movie which starts off slowly, focusing on our main character, Jason Bourne played to perfection by Matt Damon.

The entire movie is about how he pieces his life back together with the help of flashbacks and Marie, a woman he forced into helping him while he was being chased by the Interpol. They eventually fall in love while being on a run from the authorities all over the world. The main strength of the movie lies in the way it slowly and methodically unravels the truth about the main character. The action scenes are filmed with style and gritty realism and it contains some of the best car chase scenes ever orchestrated by Hollywood.

Brutal combat scenes, emotionally resonant moments where the main character is confused due to his conflicting emotional turmoil and a steady pace make this movie extremely entertaining. There are a few continuity errors but nothing distracting. Matt Damon gives one of his best performances and manages to subtly occupy the skin of the character. The movie is based on a novel of the same name written by Robert Ludlum. The only problem with the movie is that it doesn’t do justice to the source material. Most of the story is hacked off and so many characters done away with. The entire series itself doesn’t have ten percent of the plot that is in the book. But the book was complicated and it would have been extremely difficult to film.

But the end result is pleasing and while it is not as good as the third part of the series, it still makes for comprehensive viewing which is not something that can be said about most action movies being made these days.
