Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai

 

Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, one who responsible for bringing about a revolutionary change in Malayalam literature. He was a great short story writer and novelist born in Kuttanad in Alappuzha district of Kerala on April 17, 1912.

His greatest works include Kayyar in 1978, Chemmeeen in 1956, Thottiyude makan in 1947 (it has been translated into the Japanese also), Randidangazhi in 1948 and Jeevitham Sundaramanu Pakshe .. (Life is beautiful but ..) is read in Bulgaria. He had written stories based on realistic life of farmers and poors . He wrote more than 400 sort stories and more than 25 novels. Thakazhi Sivasankara  Pillai served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Academi also. His novel Kayar (Coir) got Njanapeeda Puraskar in the year 1984 and it is the second largest novel in Malayalam. His works are mainly based on the life of people in his native place Kuttanad and so he was called as ‘Kuttanad’s Artist’ .He received   Ezhuthachan Puraskaram , Kendra sahitya Academy award, Kerala Sahitya Academy award, Njanapeedam award, Vayalar award, Vallathol Purskaram. His famous works were translated into many Indian and Foreign languages. Thakazhi spent much time with the common folk of his village Kuttanad and listen carefully to their problems.

Kayar is Thakazi’s most brillaiant work and it is a love tragedy. He became well popular after his beautiful novel Chemmeen. The story is about Karuthamma and Pareekutty, the lovers. Karuthamma was the daughter of Hindu fisher man and PareeKutty was son of Muslim fish trader. The story is basically about the extra marital relationsip between these two and the popular belief (myth) among the fishermen communities in coastal area of Kerala, that the Kadalamma  (Sea Goddess) would consume a man when his wife was faithless when he was out in the sea. The story ends with their bodies being washed ashore.

The film  Chemmeen got  the President’s Award in 1965. The film was directed by Ramu Kariat and the screen play by Puram Sadanandan. The songs "Pennale pennale Karimeen Kannaale",”Maanasamaine varuu” are very famous now also. ‘Chemmeen Lahren’ was the hindi version of Chemmeen. Thakazhi was honoured with Padmabhooshan also.
