The South Indian vegetarian recipes are easy to prepare and yet great in their taste. They could be prepared by anyone at home single handed if you plan things properly. Nearly one-third of the people are estimated to be vegetarians and still they are able to get all the essential nutrients from the South Indian vegetarian recipes. People of various religions and castes live in South India and the recipes, cooking methods, eating habits of each one of them vary greatly. Anyone would certainly love their mother’s cooking because their taste buds are trained since their childhood days to appreciate the flavor and taste of the items prepared by their mother.

If you go to any good restaurant and order for South Indian meals, you will have option of ordering for full meals or half meals. Full meals would have more number of items than half meals. Appalam or pappad and pickles have a prominent place in the meals and so varieties of pickles recipe are include in the South Indian vegetarian recipes.

 

The South Indian vegetarian recipes could be classified into sweets, vegetable curries, rice varieties, savories, masala powders, pickles, milk shakes, vathal, snacks, etc. Before you try any of the South Indian vegetarian recipes you should have some essential items at hand. For example you cannot prepare sambar without sambar powder. If you do not have sambar powder then you must first prepare it. However, nowadays all these things are available readymade in shops. But if you are living in foreign countries where these items are not available you need to prepare them by yourselves.

 

The vegetable curries could be prepared with any available vegetable and it would take the name of that particular vegetable like lady’s finger curry, cabbage curry, beetroot curry, etc. All you need to do is to adjust the cooking time based on the vegetable used.

 

The South Indian vegetarian recipes are named either in Tamil or Malayalam or Kannada or Telugu. By the name of the recipe one can understand where it originated from. Some items are prepared in many regions but the names would vary from region to region. The South Indian vegetarian recipes prepared at Brahmin houses are very tasty. Some recipes are made exclusively during festival times and special occasions. For example pongal is the sweet rice prepared during the festival of Pongal. What gives great taste is not the recipe or its preparation but the commitment, effort, time spent and the love and dedication of the person who prepare.
