South Indian Politician Vaiko

 

Vaiko is the short name of Vaiyapuri Gopalaswamy and he was born in Kalingapatti village in the then Madras Presidency in a Telugu speaking Kamma Naidu family. He completed M. A. B. L. and joined Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. After few years he had a tussle with Karunanidhi the leader of the DMK party and so he left that to form his own Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party which is popularly called as MDMK.

 

He is a voracious speaker and huge group of people gather to hear his speech when he speaks in the meetings. He was selected as the member of Rajya Sabha in 1978 and served there for 18 years. He also served as a member of the parliament for two terms. Due to his good characters and good conduct he was hailed as the tiger of the parliament.

 

He supported the LTTE movement of Sri Lanka and voiced against the POTA or prevention of terrorist activities act in India. He was imprisoned for a term of 18 months. He is convinced that LTTE is not what people are thinking it is. As the movement is banned in 52 countries of the world, he is constantly giving voice to remove this ban. He claims that banning this movement is an attempt to suppress free speech.

 

He has been put in jail for many reasons like supporting LTTE and seducing the people by wrong speeches. Totally he has spent four years of his life time in prison. His disturbing speeches are main reason for this. He claimed that he was ready to take arms and fight for the Sri Lankan Tamils.

 

As a true politician, he also took part in social works to keep his party in limelight. The Blood Donors Club has been run by his party and he organizes blood donations frequently through this club. He also takes initiatives in the Tank De Silting Program loading the sand into the trucks by himself. He also conducts free medical camps in his constituency.

 

In Sivakasi town he using his own financial resources arranged for vaccinating 65 thousand children against Hepatitis B. All the three dosages of injection were provided by the medical camp free of cost. He also contributes to the rehabilitation of the handicapped children.

 

He often raises his voice for the linking of all Indian rivers. He strongly believes that this will resolve the problem of drought and famine in all the Indian states. The surplus water of one state could be diverted to the state which suffers of famine and drought through the interlinking of rivers. This will give new life to the farmers and boost agricultural produce. He voices this in the parliament quite often.

 

He also demands that the Tamil people kept hostage in the Gulf countries and other countries of the world should return back safely. He raises his voice against the nuclear power plant in Kudankulam. Through his ability of speech and through his revolutionary attitude he secured a permanent place in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu.
