South Indian Beauties Have Scored No.1 Position In Bollywood Since 1970s

Madhubala – the epitome of beauty ruled the black and white screen in the 1950s. Undoubtedly she was the most graceful actress of 1950s and early 1960s till her death. Later it was an era of many Bollywood beauties like Sharmila Tagore, Sadhana, Nanda, Asha Parekh etc. Yet with late 1950s a few south Indian beauties gained attention. Waheeda Rehman, Padmini and Vyjayanthimala are among those leading names from south who ruled Bollywood in the 1950s. Except Padmini, though the rest two beauties got equal attention as north Indian and Bengali heroines, they got noticed for their acting skills and talent in dancing. The top position of ‘graceful actress’ was the monopoly of North Indian actress indeed. Then which actress changed this trend?

She is none other than dream girl Hema malini who made her Bollywood debut with 1968 movie ‘Sapnon ka saudagar’ oppiste Raj kapoor. In 1970, two hits back to back – Andaaz and Johny Mera naam cemented her position as the Bollywood queen. Both her talents and beauty were equally appreciated and since then Hema malini enjoyed the position of ‘Most beautiful heroine’ of Bollywood. The next actress who got such an attention from public was none other Rekha! Similar to Hema malini who is a Tamilian, Rekha too was from Tamil Nadu. She is the daughter of celebrated Tamil actor Gemini Ganeshan. Though her looks were criticized in the first phase of her career, through her hard work she reached such a position that no other female Bollywood contemporaries has been able to achieve. Rekha is still regarded as the ‘Real Diva of Bollywood’.

Though couldn’t reach the stardom of Hema malini and Rekha, Jaya prada has been one of the top beauties of Bollywood in the 1980s. Rekha and Jaya – ruled Bollywood in the 1980s with their acting talents and dancing skills. With mid 1980s – a new star was born – Sridevi. Belonging to Tamil Nadu, she reached Bollywood in the mid 1980s. With a series of successes like Himmatwala, Chandini and Mr. India, she was reined as the leading female actress of Bollywood. Everyone praised her beauty as well. She faced tough competition only from her contemporary – Madhuri Dixit only. They competed one other in terms of acting skills and dancing.

After Madhuri Dixit, the actress who gone the crown of most beautiful heroine of Bollywood is none other than Aishwarya Rai. Still now she is regarded as the most beautiful Indian woman and Rai belongs to Mangalore, Karnataka. After delivery she took a break from the industry. Now let me conclude with the present decade. And last but not the least – at present the ruling queen of Bollywood (both in terms of acting skills and beauty) definitely no.1 position goes to none other than another Mangalorian girl - Deepika Padukone.

In short, though North Indian heroines are known for fair complexion and beauty, and have dominated south Indian heroines in terms of beauty, the truth is that since early 1970s, the No.1 position of Bollywood beauty has always gone to south Indian beauties, the only exceptions being Madhuri Dixit and Katrina Kaif.
