Some New Records In The Name Of M S Dhoni

The current series against Australia could easily be remembered for making and breaking a host of records, be it Dhoni’s first ever double century or Shikhar Dhawan’s hurricane innings. There is still one more match to go and who knowns those five days can spring up something more. But before looking into the future, here are some interesting stats for you.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has attained yet another milestone when he led India in the third Test against Australia at Mohali. Dhoni now has captained India in the most number of international matches – 222. Well, it isn’t just about leading the team; Dhoni has also led India to most victories since he took over.

Out of the 222 matches India played under Dhoni’s captaincy, there have been 120 victories. India has lost 78 matches when Dhoni captained India. 20 of those matches ended in either a draw or no result and the remaining four were tied. That gives Dhoni a winning percentage of 54.05.

Following Dhoni closely on the second spot is Mohd. Azharuddin. Azhar led India in 221 matches. Out of these, 104 matches have resulted in Indian victories, while India had to face defeat in 90 matches. There were 25 matches that were either drawn or no result. 2 tied matches give Azhar a winning percentage of 47.06.

Saurav Ganguly comes third with 195 matches as Team India’s leader. Leading India to victories in 97 matches makes it 49.74% wins for Ganguly – better than that of Azhar. Ganguly also had to face defeat in 78 matches – the same as M S Dhoni. This means Ganguly had lost lesser matches if we were to calculate in terms of percentage.

Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar make the list of the next captains that led India in the most number of international matches. Tendulkar and Gavaskar have led India in less than 100 international matches – Tendulkar in 98 and Gavaskar in 84 matches.

Dhoni also reached a milestone of reaching the number of 50 dismissals against Australia. Against Australia Dhoni has taken 39 catches and has carried out 11 stumpings. Dhoni has also reached this milestone against England with 4 stumpings and 46 catches.
