Some Lighting Tips For Your Home

Nowadays great importance is given to lighting while constructing new home. Good lighting not only makes a home attractive, reduces the electricity consumption as well. Earlier, all rooms were given uniform lighting, either electric bulbs or fluorescent lamps, perhaps a few decorative bulbs also added. Now trend has changed completely. Concealing and indirect lighting, to avoid direct and penetrating light rays to our eyes, is the latest update. Through this column let me give a few suggestions to make your interior attractive.

If you have enough money to afford, better go for LED. Though they are expensive, they are durable lasting for more than 9 years. They give more light with less power consumption, thus reducing your bills. Thus in long term they are profitable. Now latest technique is to hide light source behind any object. This technique is known as concealing. Another method is indirect lighting where lights are fixed in ceilings instead of walls and the rooms get reflected light.

Choose light colour shades for your rooms so that light reflexes easily. White, light pink, light blue and light green are best choices. Now it’s possible to highlight a particular wall, picture, painting or decoration like curios using spot lights. The frequently used area like kitchen and library can be given fluorescent lamps while less used spaces like balcony, living area or bed room can be given light yellow shades. Giving two or three contrasts in the same room gives an elegant appeal to viewer’s eyes.

Similarly you can decorate your garden using such decorative lights in pillars and foot steps. You can use cool lights and warm lights according to your tastes. Yellow shades give warm light while blue and white belong to cool lights. Halogen bulbs give excess heat as well as electric bills. One or two chandeliers can be added to your designs, particularly in the ceiling of dining room and living room, if your living room is of ‘open’ type.

Use wall-mounting lamps for your bedrooms. You can give task light for study table and cool shades or yellow lamps for other purposes. It depends on one’s personal preference. CFL is best for bathroom. Now, last a small note on kitchen. As told earlier, it needs good light, but it should never penetrate the person’s eyes while doing tasks. Always take care not to give lights above upper cabinets, as they cast shadows below.
