Some Causes For Cancer

Medical studies are showing a massive increase in cancer patients nowadays.

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in some parts of the body that can spread to any other part or organ in the body. We don't know all the causes of cancer but we can know some of the causes.

Lack of oxygen or de-oxygenation is the primary cause of cancer. Some people may get cancer at a very early due to smoking. Smoking lower down the oxygen level and body cells try to mutate to live in the abnormal state and as a consequence the cells may die or they adapt to survive. Apart from infectious diseases, cancers are multi factorial. This means that there is no single cause for any one type of cancer. There are about 200 different types of cancer. Some possible causes of cancer are diet and lifestyle, viruses, environmental and occupational factors, and the immune system.

In fact, many people considered high-risk never develop cancer while others with no known risk factors may get cancer. Some percent of cancers can be prevented by avoiding environmental risk factors like smoking, alcohol, sun exposure, abuse and poor nutrition. Though gender, age and family history cannot be changed, knowing your personal cancer risk can help you to take a prevention strategy with regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices. Some of the risk factors include:

Smoking, bodyweight, diet and physical activity

Different lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol, diet, or being overweight leads the causes for cancer.  Tobacco smoke is a powerful carcinogen which causes to get lung cancer. High-fat, high cholesterol diets are proven risk factors for several types of cancer. Obesity may be linked to breast cancer among older women as well as to cancers of the prostate, pancreas, uterus, colon and ovary. Many cancers that are related to dietary factors could be prevented. Healthy food choices and a well balanced diet including fiber, minerals, vitamins and low fat items may help to reduce cancer risk.

Age

Cancer can occur at any age but the risk of developing a cancer increases as we get older. This is because the changes that make a cell become cancerous in the first place take a long time to develop. This happen by accident when the cell is dividing or they can happen because the cell has been damaged by carcinogens.

Genetic causes

There need to be a number of genetic mutations within a cell before it becomes cancerous. Sometimes a person is born with one of these mutations already. This doesn't mean they will definitely get cancer. But with one mutation from the start, it makes it more likely to develop cancer during their lifetime. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes are examples of genetic predisposition. Women who carry one of these faulty genes have a higher chance of developing breast cancer than other women.

Poor immune system

People with a lower immunity may cause cancer. People having reduced immunity because of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and rare medical syndromes that reduce immunity. People had an organ transplant and are taking drugs to suppress their immune system to prevent the organ being rejected by the body.

Environmental causes

It includes tobacco smoke, sun, natural and manmade radiation, asbestos, work place hazards. High levels of radiation like those from radiation therapies and x-rays (repeated exposure) can damage normal cells and increase the risk of developing leukaemia and other cancers. Certain chemicals used in dye factories, gas works, rubber production and other chemical industries have all been linked to bladder cancer. People who have worked in industries such as ship-building and construction may have come into contact with asbestos

Viruses

Human papilloma virus (HPV) causes Cervical cancer and other cancers of the genital and anal area, and the Hepatitis B and C viruses may cause liver cancer, Epstein – Barr virus may cause  Lymphomas. Human T cell leukaemia virus may cause cancer.

You may be able to reduce your risk of developing some types of cancer by making lifestyle changes. By having regular exercise, stop smoking, avoiding sun damage to your skin, eating a well-balanced diet, including five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day and not too much red or processed meat.
