Soil Test Before You Construct Your Home

Before you construct your home on a newly purchased land, it’s most significant to conduct a soil test. Nowadays a lot of cheating takes place in realty business where low cost paddy fields are leveled and sold on high prices, thus cheating common man. So, before you construct the basement of the building, you should know if soil can support newly constructed building. If not, you may need to spend a lot for piling and other construction work to provide enough strength for the basement structure. Also, newly constructed home or flat may go down a little bit. So, know the soil first.

Why should we observe and examine?

The first and quick answer is ‘safety for new building’. If soil structure is known well, experts will advise you how to construct the basement. While you spend a lot of money to build your flat or home, to spare a little amount for these tests is of course, of vital importance. If so, you need not fear for the stability of the building later. But the saddest part is, common man is not aware of this fact! Though you spend a little money and time for soil test, in long term it’s effective.

In some cases contractors ask to do piling and beaming for stability of the building. If you confirm it through tests, it will be of course, cost effective too. If you have decided to insure your home, you should do soil test; you need to supply those papers as reports of proof too. In distant future, area available for constructing separate homes will reduce considerably and flats will be the only solution. While drawing the plans, the architect should know how many floors that basement can withstand.

Done in two ways

Soil test is done in two ways - Oral method by hands and rotary drilling method with the help of machines. Rotary drilling method is nowadays popular and is done using standard penetration test (SPT). Two or three pits will be made here and there and soil taken from those places. The process continues till the best soil is obtained. Samples are taken from each metre distance. Then end value is calculated and if soil factors show vast deviations new set of pits will be drawn. When this end value is given to lab, along with soil factors stretcher engineers give you suggestions about the basement to be constructed.

Clay soil needs extra support. Laterite and sand though don’t have serious problems we can’t completely assure that the layer beneath it is not of mud. If sand ground is enough strong rumbled footing is enough. Also, if an already existing building is demolished to construct a new one, after leveling the ground with its remains, you need to confirm if piling is not needed.
