September 2 - World Coconut Day

“Kalpa vriksh” – Coconut tree is given the name because all its parts can be used for one purpose or other. Its name was derived from Portuguese word, ‘Cocus’, meaning ‘resembling monkey’s face’ or ‘skull’. Same word was used in English and Latin languages also. If we fully concentrate our discussion on Kerala, it can be termed as ‘Green Gold’ for God’s own country. The name ‘Kerala’ itself derived from ‘Coconut’. 35% of Kerala’s cultivation belongs to coconut. But the past few years have noticed a drastic come down in the percentage of coconut cultivation, adversely affecting Kerala’s economy as well as the farmers related to it.  That was the reason why ‘Neera’ project – drink from coconut gained attention in the state. So, let me share a few more interesting facts about coconut.

Coconut water (juice) has much resemblance to blood plasma. During ancient times of war, coconut water has been given to injured patients in case of emergency. It’s a natural juice given by nature, a healthy drink too. After pure water, coconut water is the most pure form of water available. It doesn’t carry fats or cholesterol, making it a healthy drink for all. Coconut oil and water are good for glowing skin and prevent it from allergies.

Neera (sweet toddy) is prepared from flower bundles that have not been blossomed yet. From a healthy coconut tree, it’s possible to produce 1.5 to 2 litres of neera. It’s nutritious too as it contains Vitamin B in abundant. So, projects and discussions are going on in Kerala to produce neera in large scale. It will be a blessing to farmers too, whose life is solely dependent on coconut farming.

Now let us move to Philippines – the nation where coconut production plays an important role in its national economy. Once in every year, coconut festival is conducted in San Pablo of Laguna provinces of the country. This festival is being celebrated every January during the first week. Colourful processions and street dances are the main attractions of this colourful festival. Decorative is chosen only from materials obtained from coconut tree – that’s the main significance of this coconut festival. So, why can’t we too arrange a ‘coconut festival’?
