Sachin Tendulkar - The Pinnacle Of Indian Cricket

When we think of Indian cricket and its moments of glory since the days of independence, only one name comes to mind and it is that of Sachin Tendulkar. He eclipses all other names. When he made his debut as a sixteen year old schoolboy, no one had even visualised the impact this young boy will make on the Indian cricket scene for the next two decades and more.  No one has had a greater influence on the game of cricket in India ever since the game was introduced here in 1721 by the East India Company English sailors who played the first cricket match at Cambay near Baroda.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born in Bombay on 24th April 1973. He is the son of Ramesh Tendulkar, a renowned Marathi novelist and Rajni Tendulkar who worked in the insurance field.  He began his cricket career at Sharadashram Vidyamandir High School in Bombay under the coaching of  Ramakant Achrekar.  He was encouraged to play professional cricket by his elder brother, Ajit Tendulkar.

When he was 15 years and 232 days old, Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten century in his debut first class match for Bombay against Gujarat on 11th December 1988, making him the youngest player to score a century on first class debut. It was Raj Singh Dungarpur who initiated Tendulkar into the Indian Test and One Day Team for the tour to Pakistan in 1989. He made his international debut for India, playing his first test match at 16 years 205 days, making him the third youngest player in the history of cricket to make a debut behind Hasan Raza (14 years 227 days) and Mushtaq Mohammad (15 years 124 days), both representing Pakistan.

During his debut series in Pakistan, Sachin Tendulkar made his mark instantly as a batsman who was not deterred by the explosive bowling attack of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. In the last test at Sialkot, he refused medical assistance even after being hit by a bouncer on his nose and continued to bat with a bleeding nose. Later, in 1989, he made his debut in fifty overs- a- side one-day international also at Gujranwala in Pakistan. The debut tour to Pakistan was followed by tours to New Zealand and England in 1990. He got his debut test century in England, making him then as the second youngest cricketer in history at 17 years 107 days behind Mushtaq Mohammad of Pakistan who made his century against India in 1961 at Delhi when he was 17 years 78 days old. Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh went on to become the youngest test centurion against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 2001 when he was 17 years 61 days old. Ever since he got his maiden hundred in England, Tendulkar has not looked back and what a career it has been!

Sachin Tendulkar, today, holds most if not all of the records that a batsman could endeavour to break. He has the highest number of appearances in test cricket as well as one day internationals. He has the highest number of test centuries (51), highest number of one day centuries (48), highest number of runs scored ever in tests (14692), highest number of runs scored ever in one day internationals (18111) and the highest individual score in one day internationals (200 not out).

As far as Indian cricket representation goes, Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest. In the history of world cricket, only one person has had a greater influence than him and that is Sir Donald Bradman. The impact that his batting has made on all the other cricketing nations has taken Indian cricket to its pinnacle.
