Sachin Tendulkar And The Tale Of Wankhede Stadium

For Sachin Tendulkar the Wankhede stadium might go down the memory lane for two things – winning the World Cup here a couple of years ago and playing his last – the 200th – Test match at this venue. On both occasions, his team mates lifted him on their shoulders and took out a lap of victory.

Well, the Master Blaster deserves all that and much more. The memories are cozy and anyone will like to re-live the dream again and again. The moments were special even for his fans who couldn’t control their emotions as their tears told the tale of everything.

The tale of the Wankhede is that of missed centuries for the Master Blaster. For Sachin Mumbai might be his hometown and the Wankhede is a stadium where he practiced cricket like any other struggling kid before he became the God, but it is this very stadium that has made him look human.

Sachin has been out in the 70s three times (including his last innings of 74 runs). In the 80s he got out once and on two occasions, in the 90s.

In a 1993 game against England, Sachin was dismissed on 78 LBW by the bowler Phil Tufnell. The next year was even more heartbreaking as he had to depart for a well made 85 runs against the West Indies. The off spinner Carl Hooper got his wicket this time around.

The year 2000 was the most ‘destructive’ for Sachin as against South Africa Sachin was out for 97 runs, agonizingly three runs short of a well-deserved century. In 2001 it was time for the Aussies to deny Sachin another century. He was dismissed for 76 runs, but this was the top score for India in that match, as any other batsman was hardly able to face the mighty Aussie attack then.

A couple of years ago, it was again against the West Indies that Sachin missed the three-figure mark. Wankhede was in utter silence as Sachin walked off the field for 94 runs as Ravi Rampaul celebrated along with Darren Sammy, who took the catch.

And interestingly, it was again Darren Sammy, who spoiled the party for Sachin by taking his catch on his farewell innings for 74 runs.
