Roti, Kapda, Makan And Mobile!

I recently read a news paper that said that more than 5 crore mobile handsets were sold in India in the last year. I have no idea to what extent this news is true and reliable but what it forced me to think is that cell phones or similar mobile devices are holding pivot roles in many lives. Why? When there are so many people dying without phones, why are mobile phones so important? Let’s see!

Many people will argue mobile phones are life lines of modern day communication. I would disagree. I would also like to add that mobile phones help spoil communication. Let’s argue on that point, the cell phone, this tiny little electronic device connects you to a distant cousin living miles away, great! But what it also manages to do, pretty successfully is to distance you from the person closer to you physically, the person sitting right beside you.

The next argument that people who love their blackberrys will tell me is that these mean machines have made work easier and quicker, I agree to some extent, on the other hand I realize that these mobile devices have also complicated the work behavior of people. People are working longer and what they call harder, but are they actually doing productive work? Surveys have found out that maximum time spent on such smart-phones goes into unproductive work like watching videos, playing games, listening to songs etc.  all this time if utilized at the proper place can easily make a person more productive, but these “entertainment demons” are here to stay!

Let’s move on to the app user base. There are a number of smart-phone users who love their apps. Well there is nothing bad or wrong about that. There are a number of useful apps that help make life easy. I agree, but can’t all of us live without these Apps? Didn’t mankind reach their destinations before google maps were invented? Didn’t people entertain themselves before angry birds was invented? Many of us will be forced to believe that we cannot live without our cell phones, they have become an extension of our hands, I disagree, big time!
