June 15, 1971 - The day when the greatest actor of Malayalam left the world at the peak of his career. He had the appearance of a school master going to school. His tilted head style says everything about mannerisms. The actor who has given a few memorable roles to Malayalis is fondly called Sathyan Master by his fans and followers.
Born as Sathyaneshan Nadar in old Travancore, he was a military officer who served the country during Second World War. Later he returned to Travancore to do police officer’s job. Yet his destination was something else. If not, will an actor debut as hero of big screen at the age of 39? Definitely not! Yet, it was only due to his talent and experiences in school and college dramas that he was always casted as the main hero of movies. He has even done many multistar cast movies. Yet he has never done second hero position in any of his roles. While he was doing job, he had never saluted his higher officers! That shows his stiffness of mind and power that he showed later in the movies.
Though he appeared in serious roles frequently and used to run from one studio to another for shooting, he has been facing a few personal vows. He had three children. Unluckily all were blind! Whole throughout his life and career, he had worried about his three kids and faced the camera hiding everything in mind. Also, he used to run from one shooting to another to make his kids’ future secure and to do treatment for them. While he was doing so, someday, he was detected of blood cancer. Instead of crying and blame god, he stayed stiff and continued shooting as if nothing has happened to him. Perhaps his active film life was the only thing that lagged his death to more than 10 years, though he was at his early 50’s when cancer was detected. Also, it gave a few memorable roles too. Most of his movies during the last phase of his life are regarded as the milestone movies of Malayalam cinema. When he ran from one place to another forgetting his misfortunes, acting in front of camera as well as others and dear ones, history witnessed one among the greatest celebrities of Kerala.
Though he was friendly to all, he hid all his personal miseries and his diseases. Very often, he returned to shooting soon after blood transfusion. Though his death is still a mystery, it is widely believed that his death happened at Chennai hospital. This is my earnest tribute to the most talented star of Malayalam cinema on his 42th death anniversary.
