Remembering Our Dearest Bapu

“The light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere. The light that has illumined this country for these many years will illumine this country for many more years, and a thousand years later, that light will be seen in this country and the world will see it and it will give solace to innumerable hearts.” These words were told by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru on All India Radio when our dearest Bapu left us forever. His words became true!

Now Gandhi Darshan has gained much wide popularity all over the world. UNO has already declared Gandhi Jayanthi as ‘Non-violence Day’ worldwide. Many leaders including president of USA Barack Obama see him as their role model. 64 years have passed since Gandhiji has left us. Yet he stays alive in our heart as a symbol of light, knowledge and principles even after years.

With truth, without fear

In 1905, Gandhiji returned from South Africa to India. He coded a new weapon to fight against British, a new tool that no one has seen before – Non violence and satyagraha. When Gandhiji selected India as his new pool, India was under the fear of British rule. Foreign rule made Indians cowards. Holding firm the principles – satya, dharma, justice and ahimsa, he freed Indian people from the fist of fear and lack of confidence to fight against British Empire.

Mahatma Gandhi led Indians from front, digging a new path from strikers with attributes satyagraha, breaking laws and denying taxes. Indians moved forward without deviating from the principles of Ahimsa. Whenever situations arose where Ahimsa slips to himsa, he had stopped the strikes ignoring all protests.

Gandhiji’s Charka

Gandhiji saw charka as the means to lesson hunger and poverty of Indians. ‘India is like a home in fire. It is struggling in poverty. Hunger takes India nearer to Charka – Gandhiji saw charka as the revolutionary tool for economic freedom.

World’s Mahatma

The name ‘Mahatma’ given by Rabindranath Tagore made Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi famous world wide. In his costumes and way of living, he was as simple as a sadhu. When he did what he preached, millions from all over the world appreciated it and placed him in their heart as their role model.

Heart breaking parting

He taught the whole world that fasting is the best weapon to fight and it hurt him most when India was divided into two parts based on religion. The great preacher of love and sacrifice whose prayer was ‘Iswar Allah Tere Naam’ was crucified by his own people within months of Indian Independence. When he was shot dead by Nadhuram Godse, the last word he uttered was ‘Hey Ram!’
