Raveendran - Mohanlal Combination Malayalam Movies

When Raveendran was doing the work of Vadakkumnathan in 2004, not even he might have imagined that it’s going to be his masterpiece. Not only that, he might not have even thought that he is to leave the music world very soon after its music release. Kalabham (2007) was the last released movie of Raveendran as a music director.  It was released after his death. Music of Vadakkumnathan was still in the air and hence it’s widely regarded as the last composition of all time great composer of Malayalam since 1980s – Raveendran. When he left the world on 3 March 2005, movie ‘Vadakkumnathan’ has not been released. It was released posthumously one year later on May 19, 2006. It’s one of the best musical movies of megastar Mohanlal too and the last one too. So, through this article, let me mention a few more memorable compositions that Raveendran has given to Mohanlal.

Films are many. Let me begin with Bharatham. It was in 1991, when Mohanlal received his first National award for best actor. Bharatham was a movie purely based on Carnatic music and Raveendran has given full justification for its compositions too. Yet music lovers and Mohanlal fans still remember the movie for its climax and the breathless song sung by Yesudas, Ramakatha gaanalayam. Yesudas too, received National awards for best playback singing, beating SPB with a slight margin (Keledi kanmani – breathless song).

Raveendran was the music director of Chiriyo chiri. This comic movie is remembered for two memorable songs – Kokkampanni (for kids) and Samayaradhangalil. Kokkampanni is linked with many kids’ fantasies of kids of 80’s, including me while the second one is highly spiritual and philosophical. These two songs are among earliest hits of Mohanlal too. It was followed by Aattakalasam. ‘Naanamaakunnu’ was one of the sedative numbers of middle 1980’s. This film too, contained a kids’ song sync lipped by Mohanlal – Malarum kiliyum oru kudumbam.

It’s not at all easy to include all songs of this wonderful combination in a single list. So, before I quit let me mention a few more memorable films. Dhanam, Lal salaam, Raja shilpi, Ey Auto, Aaraam Thamburan, Ayal katha ezhuthukayaanu, Abhimanyu, Yuvaganolsavam, Sukhamo devi, Soorya gayathri, Kamaladalam, Kizhakkunarum Pakshi, His highness Abdulla, Aham, Kaliyil alppam kaaryam, Uncle bun and Kanmadham are a few such. For all movies of Mohanlal based on traditional stories, dance, music or any other art form, Raveendran has been the first choice. With his unexpected disappearance after Vadakkumnathan, the void still remains unfilled. “hari muralieeravam”, “Pramathavanam”, “Hey Krishna”, “Anantha nadanam”, “Ambili kala chhoddun” ….I can’t stop myself from humming such classical songs!
