Rahul Dev Burman was one of the most popular musicians of the Indian cinema during the decades of 1960-90. In fact, the credit of introducing Rock and Western music to Bollywood movies mostly goes to him. Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as RD or Pancham, was born on June 27 in 1939 in the family of one of the greatest Indian musicians Shri Sachin Dev Burman and Mira Burman.

RD Burman came to Mumbai along with his family where Pancham began to learn playing Sarod under the able guidance of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. He also mastered the art of playing Tabla, Harmonium, Bongo and Conga drums etc and soon started making musical notes. He composed his first musical note at a very tender age of nine. The song he composed – ‘Ey Meri Topi Palat ke Aa’ was used in 1956 movie ‘Fantoosh’ by his father.

RD Burman started his musical campaign with ‘Solhvan Saal,’ ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, Kaagaz ke Phool’ as an assistant director with his father but soon did his first film as independent music director for Guru Dutt’s ‘Raaj’ in 1959. The film did not see the daylight as it had to be canned before its release. His first film released was ‘Chote Nawab’ in 1961 that established him as a music director instantly.

His career

In the decade of 1960, RD tried his hands on different jobs. He did many movies with his father including Bandini, Teen Deviyan, Guide, Jewel Thief, and Talash as an assist director. He acted in few movies as a comedian such as Bhoot Bangla, Pyar Ka Mousam. Incidentally, he composed the music of Bhoot Bangla as well. In the mean time Teesari Manzil did exceptionally well that gave him an instant recognition in Bollywood. After that, he gave many musical hits to Indian cinema including Padosan, Waris, Amar Prem, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Sita our Gita and Sholey, which created a history in Indian cinema.

His personal life

He married in 1966 but that marriage did not last long, later he married famous singer Asha Bhonsle. He composed music for many successful movies by 1980 but later he faced a lean period. He had heart attacks in 1988 and 1994 and the second one proved fatal for this great musician.
