Philips And The Monkey Pen - A New Take On Parenting

Most recently I watched the Malayalam movie - Philips and the Monkey Pen. No doubt, it’s the most inspiring movie I have watched in the recent times. Though the movie is tagged as a ‘Children’s film’, it’s not the case. It gives some nice messages not only to young buddies, but also to teachers, parents and society. The theme is so fresh and new with a real twist in the end and the movie is highly recommended by critics as ‘Must watch for all kids and parents’. Yes, it teaches new lessons of parenting to all those parents who believe ‘stick’ is the best medicine for their kid’s mischiefs.

The lead role is played by young boy - Sanoop Santhosh, younger brother of Malayalam actress Sanusha and he has given full life to the pivot character - Ryan Philip, the naughty boy. No doubt Sanoop has lived up to this character and he is the real star of the show. Yet there are two more stars in the movie – the magic pen named monkey pen and Ryan’s father Roy Philip who turned out to be the ultimate scene stealer of the show in the movie’s climax. Jayasurya played Roy Philip in this movie. Yes, many Indian movies have come and gone. Yet no other Indian movie has been able to give new definitions to ‘Parenting’ as this Malayalam movie did.

The story is about a 10-year mischievous boy who hates studies and mathematics most. He, along with his three friends is the real headache to school. He never does his homework and do mischiefs to receive hate everyone. Yet he shares a unique bond and friendship with his father who never scolds him, though he knows that his son is not travelling in the right path. Ryan communicates with God, the character played by actor Innocent in a unique way whenever he is upset and God gives him many suggestions as well. Then the magic pen – Monkey Pen comes to his life which does his homework every day when Ryan is asleep. Ryan also remains cool as he doesn’t receive scolding from his teacher. But later Monkey Pen asks him to do so 5 simple things in his life and it communicates with him by writing on a white board in his bedroom, one task a day.

Ryan does all the 5 things that Monkey pen asks him and very soon he become the star of the school, earning appreciation from his teachers as well who used to hate him earlier. He gives new messages not only to children of the school, but also to his teachers and headmaster. Ryan gets all its credits, though the ideas are given by monkey pen. Ryan shares the secret of the pen only with his close friends and hides it even from his father. Once, his father tells him that we should earn everything with our hard work; then only it is fruitful. Ryan understands his mistakes and this advice changes him a lot. Though monkey pen is the dearest thing of his life he throws it away into the sea and determines himself that hereafter he will earn anything in his life only with his hard work. But before that, he asks his father, ‘Was it you who did the homework for me?’ for which his father replies ‘No’, but Roy Philip smiles to himself.

Yes, here lies the answer. Though the movie travels through some mysterious and fantasy world like ‘Lage raho Munna Bhai’, it finishes at a real climax, not a fantasy one and gives a strong message to its viewers as well. Yes, Roy Philip brought his son back to the right path without his knowledge. Real parenting is also so, to bring our children to the right way by making them feel that they have done something wrong. It should never be through our advices or scolding, but ‘right action at the right time’.
