Parliamentary Democracy: Gateway To Good Governance

Decades after independence, giving its citizens the rights that rightfully belong to them, the parliamentary democracy in India has proven to provide a path for good governance. Why did Indians want to set themselves free from the clutches of the British even when the country was undergoing rapid development? The only answer is that our ancestors felt uncomfortable with the rule of the British as they felt it was completely bad governance. The drawback is that people of this colonized nation weren’t granted any rights that were due to them.

Recently newspapers and various other media were filled with reports and failure of governments across the world. One of them was Libya. Gaddafi did promise ideals like socialism, liberation, emancipation and secularism, but as time passed by, Gaddafi’s ideals took a different turn. They changed to violence, cruelty and injustice. Agitated by this, the people of Libya stood up and protested against it and put an end to his reign early this year. Libya faced such a crisis due to the absence of the parliament.

In the United States of America all the decisions need not be the voice of the majority but it is generally the voice of one man: The president. The USA practices a system of presidential democracy. In other words the president in a presidential democracy is an illegitimate dictator. He has the right to accept or decline a law. He has the veto power. But in a parliamentary democracy the power lies in the hands of the people. It is the people of the nation who decide what the nation wants and not a single person.

The term ‘democracy’ is derived from Greek terminology ‘demos’ and ‘kratus’, which means ‘the rule of people’. With its features giving more and more power to the legislature and people of the nation, the parliamentary democracy proves itself to be the ‘people’s government’. In countries with a variety of culture and tradition, and difference amongst people, like India, Parliamentary Democracy is the right form of government as it is a gateway to good governance and we as Indians must make proper use of it.
