Padmarajan Is Often Referred As 'Gandharva' Of Malayalam Cinema

Perhaps Padmarajan is regarded as the most versatile director of Malayalam, if we take Adoor Gopala Krishnan as an exception. While Adoor concentrated only on art cinema, Padmarajan popularized commercial cinema through an invisible track that’s not easy for other directors to follow. If you ask any Malayalam director of present times, who is your inspiration and from whose style you have learnt primary lessons of film making, I am sure, no director can exclude the name of this creative director. In true means, he was the Gandharava of Malayalam cinema – the man with magical touch to conquer everyone’s heart with his distinct style of film making. Not only that, he used to pick up his subjects from his surroundings and experiences. That’s why they look live and real even at the present times. Best example is Thuvanathumbikal, starring Mohan Lal, Parvathy and Suma Latha. I doubt, if Malayalis have seen the intense and beauty of rain in cinema more charming than this movie! its climax also contained something really mysterious like a ‘Gandharva’ story.

Gandharva is a person of celestial word who is proficient in art – dance, song and romance. Padmarajan has romanced we people through his wonderful creations and made us feel romantic too. Now let me tell you, how he left the world like Gandharva. He was only 45 and physically and mentally fit when death took him away in the form of heart attack. The movie released just one week before was ‘Jnan Gandharan’ (1991), starring Nitish Bhardwaj and Suparna. He had a lot of expectations from this project and did lovely creativity too. But the first week collection was a bit low, perhaps it may because leading hero was not from Malayalam, but from North India. Nitish was Sri Krishna of Ram Anand Sagar’s Ramayana and was a familiar face too. Padmarajan was a bit disappointed.

When he decided to make this move, many people warned him not to make it as it was believed that it may give Gandharva’s curse, as per Hindu mythology. Before also, only few films have been made in Indian screen based on this subject though grandmothers had a lot of folk tales in their hands. Many unhappy incidents took place in the film sets too. Director also began to lose his weight without any reason. Those bad omens didn’t affect the shooting and the movie was completed and released. But what to do, similar to Gandharava of the movie, he made us love that Gandharava, but left earth when he can’t stay more here! Yes, climax of the movie and director’s life was almost same! His death is really a great loss to Keralites.
