The movement was commanded by Mahatma Gandhi and last from September 1920 to February 1922. The movement was supported by Indian national Congress. The main motive of the movement to refuse the British goods and adopt the use of Indian handicraft. First time in history hundreds of thousands people gathered in this non-violence movement.

Reason behind the Movement: Gandhiji calls this nationwide protest against Rowlett Act. Every citizen of India was encouraged to boycott the English manufactured goods especially clothes and public transport. All offices and workshops were shut down. All personal were encouraged to draw from the schools, public services and military. The barristers were requested to leave the government court. Some leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Annie Besant, Bipin Chandra Pal and Mohammad Ali Jinnah opposed this idea. But the youth generation of India backed Mahatma Gandhi. The congress party also adopted this plan and receive widespread backing from Muslim leaders.

Succession and Suspension: The British authority was shocked from the victory of this movement. Almost every citizen of India boycotted the British manufactured goods and give resignation from government jobs. On 5th February 1922, in Chauri Chaura, a violent clash took place between police and protester, in which protester were executed by cops. The police station was set on fire by protester and killed 22 police personal.

Mahatma Gandhi sensed that revolt was going out of course and disappointed from this incident as the revolt lost its peaceful nature. Gandhiji appealed Indian public to stop the resistance and call off the non-cooperation movement. He stopped the movement and was detained on 10th march 1922. He got imprisonment for six year on 18th march 1922 for publishing the material of sedition among the public.

Later a similar movement was introduced by Gandhiji in 1930 named as civil disobedience movement. Most of the historian proposes that the movement was sufficient to disrupt the backbone of English rule and result in the liberation of India.
