Nature is green and nature has its own natural kitchen. It has a strong powerhouse that prepares food for all living beings on earth and serves it freely to all.
Cooking and serving
As soon as sun rays fall on green leaves and roots absorb moisture from soil, this natural kitchen becomes busy with morning work. Those green particles that freely float through plant cells are called chlorophyll and they absorb sun rays to prepare food. It combines sun’s energy with hydrogen and carbon dioxide to form glucose molecules. Sun’s light energy gets stored as chemical energy in this glucose. This glucose is used by the plant as energy and what remain get stored in its body parts as fruits, seeds, stem, leaves etc. When animals eat them, stored energy packets reach their body too. The unique property to convert solar energy to food energy is only possible for plants and a few bacteria.
The secret of green
Chlorophyll is able to absorb radiations of a particular frequency only. Among those 7 colours, colours with the highest wave length – red, blue and violet are needed for photosynthesis. That means the presence of red with highest wave length catalyses the process a lot. When these three colours are absorbed, green is released. That’s the reason why leaves are green.
How oxygen is formed
Through stem, absorbed water reaches leaves for photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is directly absorbed from earth’s atmosphere. Through minute pores they enter leaves. Using certain enzymes of chlorophyll and sunlight, water is decomposed to oxygen and hydrogen. Thus oxygen released after photosynthesis got released in the atmosphere, thus giving fresh air to living beings.
Grass is the real star
We can’t neglect the helps given by green grass. All grains including rice and wheat belong to this category and human beings and herbivores mostly depend on them to get rid of their hunger. Cattle and other animals that depend on grass can also be included. Its leaves are arranged in such a way that it can absorb more sunlight – leaves are lengthy too.
Even if sunlight is not present
It’s also possible to conduct photosynthesis in the absence of natural sunlight. Scientists have proved the process in the presence of fluorescent lights.
Won’t happen in moonlight
If intensity of light is greater or less than what desired, photosynthesis never happens. As light gets reflected in moon, its intensity is low and hence can’t help the process.
When had it started first?
It happened in Pre Camprian Era, about 600 million years ago. Due to natural calamities, when green plants of oceans reached land surface, they started photosynthesis to prepare their own food.
