NATIONAL SONG OF INDIA

The national song of India is Vande Mataram and the national anthem of India is Jana Gana Mana. Vande Mataram is respected at par with the national anthem and hence this patriotic song is called as the national song of India. It was written in Sanskrit language by Bankimchandra Chatterji in 1876 and was published in the journal Anandamatha in 1882. It was first sung in the 1896 session of Indian National Congress in Calcutta by Rabindranath Tagore.

In the 1901 session of Congress in Calcutta the song was sung by the poet Sarala Devi Chaudurani. The words Vande Mataram became very famous that a journal in the name was started by Lala Lajpat Rai. When Bhikaiji Cama designed the first version of Indian National Flag in 1907 it contained this slogan in the center.

The national song of India Vande Mataram acted as a protesting voice against British rule in India. People of various parts of India started to chant the slogan Vande Mataram in their patriotic fervor during their freedom struggle. This meant Hail to the Mother land. British government on seeing the power of this song, banned the song and anyone expressed it was imprisoned. However this song had to face controversy as the Muslim population of India saw this as a biased song since it contained the word Ma Durga representing the Hindu Goddess much against their monotheistic beliefs.

The national song of India Vande Mataram was used to inspire the zeal and passion in the pre-independence time but was not adopted as the National Anthem of India. The song Jana Gana Mana by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore was made as the Indian National Anthem and hence the song Vande Mataram is represented as the national song.

The first three lines of the song is Vande Maataram, Sujalaam suphalaam malayaja shitalaam, Sashyashyaaamalaam maatram. This song has a very beautiful meaning and Sir Aurobindo rendered the official English translation of the song though there are so many other translations. Rabindranath Tagore set the tune for the song. The song has 26 lines and is full of praise for the mother land.

The meaning of the national song of India goes as though a son of the mother paying tribute to her for all her richness and all her resources. Mother India is hailed for its fertility and production of crops, beauty of her lands and for all her virtues and it echoes the voices of all the citizens of the nation. The poet thanks his mother land for its charm and for all the wisdom it has provided him and for its divineness.

The song mentions the Hindu goddesses Durga for her rage and fury against her enemies and Lakshmi on the lotus for her purity and perfection. The poet bows his head towards his motherland for its cool streams and green orchards, for its lovely lands and plentiful wealth. The first two verses of the song were given the official status as the National Song of India in 1950.
