National Awards For Female Playback - An Amazing Fact

I was just going through Wikipedia page of National awards for best female playback when I found an amazing fact. Is it possible to give away best singer award for two singers in two different years exactly for the same composition? That too, exactly for the remake of the same movie! A viewer may say, ‘No! How can it be possible? How can award be given to two singers for exactly the same song?’ You might be wondering how. Yes, it has happened once; may be a co-incidence or something else. I am not sure enough if someone before me has also noticed in same fact.

Yes, it happened in the year 1997 when K. S. Chitra was awarded the best female playback singer at National awards for the melodious number – Payali chun mun chun mun. She rendered her magical voice for Tabu who played lead role in the movie, Virasat. Virasat, directed by Priyadarshan was released in the year 1997, exactly five years after its Tamil original – Thevar Magan. Anil Kapoor, Tabu and Pooja Batra reprised the roles played by Kamal Hassan, Revathy and Gauthami respectively. Original music score was given by none other than music maestro – Ilaiyaraaja. Thevar Magan, released in the year 1992 accumulated numerous National awards including Best regional film, best supporting actress and best audiography. Along with it, Janaki received her fourth and last award for best female playback. The song was ‘Inji Iduppazhagi’, pictured on Revathy.

You might be wondering what’s so special if Thevar Magan’s music was given by Ilaiyaraaja and Virasat’s music by Anu Malik. Though Anu Malik recreated music for Virasat, he kept one track original. The track was none other than "Inji Iduppazhagi" sung by Janaki. He didn’t even give the credits to the original music composer, Ilaiyaraaja. Surprisingly, when Chitra sang exactly the same song in Hindi version, she won National awards for playback singing. It was for the first time she received National awards for a North Indian language. Chitra calls singer Janaki as Janaki amma and regards her as the true inspiration, alongside none other than Lata Mangeshkar. Perhaps it might be Chitra’s great tribute to her inspiring singer, whom she calls Janaki Amma.
