Nashik is one of the prominent cities of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is noted for its wine production that it is at present called as the Wine Capital of India. The pleasant climate of the city coupled with its picturesque surroundings attracts more visitors from various parts of the country. The city is irrigated by the River Godavari and so it is rich in its agricultural production. It is also revered as one of the holy cities of the nation as Kumbh Mela festival is conducted here once in 12 years. The former name of the city was Gulshanabad and later it was changed into Nashik.

 

Expect for the hot summer season lasting from March to June, the climate remains moderate. Only in summer the temperature rises to up to 37 degree Celsius and the onset of monsoon comes as a relief for the scorching heat. The months of June, July and September are the monsoon seasons. But the rainfall has decreased considerable owing to deforestation and industrialization. The winters are dry and mildly cold.

 

Nashik being the fourth fastest growing city in the country and 15th fastest growing city in the world attracts more and more business people from various parts of the country. The major industries and good educational institutions pull both workforce and students’ community. Usually they reach Nashik by train. The railway station here is located at a distance of 10 km from the city center. It is a part of the Central Railways. There are daily trains to Mumbai and Pune.

 

Those who are coming from long distances have to land in the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport and take bus or train from there to reach Nashik. Though there is a small airport in Nashik, it is not operated at present. The distance from Mumbai to Nashik is 160 km and it takes four hours journey by bus. There are frequent buses connecting these cities.

 

Sita Gufaa, Panchvati, Ganga Ghat, Phalke Smaarak, Someshwar, Mineral Museum, Bhaktidham and Veda Mandir are some of the places of interest in Nashik. To explore them all, the best choice would be to board the Nashik Darshan buses run by the Nashik Corporation. Though it will show you around all important places of interest, it is better to purchase tickets a day before to avoid last minute disappointments. Alternate choice would be to use the regional public transportation. Auto rickshaws and cars will also serve the purpose.

 

Nashik is noted for its silverware craftsmanship and it could be purchased at Saraf Bazar. Other shopping places in the city are Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Main Road and Canada Corner. The ornaments and other silverware are found in these places that attract people.

 

Maharashtrian cuisine is popular in Nashik though there are many Nashik restaurants serving other types like Punjabi cuisine, Rajasthan cuisine and Gujarat cuisine. The Missal is the traditional curry served in different tastes with the Indian bread named Pav. Many hotels in Nashik are located in Mumbai Agra road.
