It’s not a secret that Mukesh is the ghost voice of Raj Kapoor. That’s the reason why when Mukesh passed away, Raj Kapoor exclaimed, “My voice has gone!!!” During the late 40’s and 50’s, Manna Dey’s voice was preferred for Raj Kapoor. During 50’s, Raj Kapoor’s screen presence was voice tested with the singing voices both Mukesh and Manna Dey. Yet after a short while we have seen that only Mukesh’s voice has been used for Raj Kapoor, till his last film. What’s so special in Mukesh’s voice that prompted Raj Kapoor to see his voice and pain in him? What was that common thing that bridged them both? It may not be easy to find answer to these two questions. So, let me tell in brief, what are those magical mega blockbuster songs of Mukesh and Raj Kapoor combination that are mentioned most, while discussing about music of Black and White era of Bollywood.

Mukesh used to give extra life to Raj kapoor’s songs, particularly singing the title tracks. That’s the reason why title tracks of Raj Kapoor’s films became more popular than other tracks, even more popular than solo songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Let me give a few instances. Let us remember once again the title tracks of Chalia, Jis des mein ganga behta hai, Anari, Sangam and Awara. Without hesitation we can easily point out that it’s through those solo title tracks sung by Mukesh for Raj Kapoor that those movies are still remembered. ‘Chalia mera naam’, ‘Bol radha bol sangam hoga ki nahi’, ‘Jis des mein ganga behti hai’ and ‘Awara hoon Awara hoon’ are definitely the best tracks of these movies.

Not only title tracks, a few solo as well as duets have also hit magical charts.  Dost dost na raha of Sangham, Mera jootha hai japani of Shree 420, Sajan re jhoot mat bolo of Teesri kasam, Jeena yaha marna yaha and Jaane kaha gaye woh din of Mera naam joker, Aa ab laut chalein of Jis desh mein Ganga behthi hai, Ek din bikh jayega of Dharam Karam, and Dum dum diga diga are a few more instances to prove the magical touch of Mukesh – Raj Kapoor combinations.
