Moral Policing

We see events happening everyday that make us question out humanity. People getting beaten up and lynched by mobs over some benignly stupid reasons are common news stories. Fights and controversies over religion are commonplace. Why is that happening in our country? What is it with people not only taking justice in their but deciding what is right and wrong?

Recently in Mangalore a group of students were having a party at a home stay which they had rented. Apparently someone among the neighbors called the local Shiv Sena brigade and informed them about this. And the next thing the teenagers from the party are getting beaten up and this exact image is splashed all over the news. Think about their future and their life after such a traumatic incident. One of the girls among them was also beaten in front of the camera. Apparently their crime was celebrating a birthday party. If a student’s life can be ruined by doing something that students generally do then where is the humanity?

This has been going on for quite a while now. This is what one would call fake vigilantism. First of all vigilantism is wrong. And fake vigilantism on top of that is worse because there is no moral reason for doing it. Nobody has the right to take the law in their hands. What are the police for?

And nobody definitely has the right to decide what is and what is wrong. If this continues and if measures are not taken to stop it then our society will definitely go to the dogs. Moral policing will become rampant and soon people won’t know the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Our justice system will become incumbent and that is something nobody wants. Sadly some people actively support this kind of crime. Yes, it is a type of crime and it is high time that it is treated that way.

Humans are animals at the base level. That is why things like society and laws were created in the first place. It is our duty as humans to uphold these laws and values. Otherwise there is no difference between us and apes.
