“Mere desh ki darthi sona ugale” – This particular song of film Upkaar gave National award to the famous playback singer of Bollywood, Mahendra Kapoor. This particular song created great waves that time, during early 70’s and played a significant role in placing Manoj Kumar as ‘Bharat Kumar’ of Bollywood. Talk about patriotic songs and movies are incomplete without mentioning this great actor’s name. He has given numerous milestone movies as well as patriotic songs to Bollywood and let us briefly talk about this veteran actor and his contributions to Bollywood as a personality who gave much importance to our country and its culture.

“Dulhan chale” or “Ab ke baras tujhe darthi ki rani” – Manoj Kumar has given a niche to Bollywood to fame him as the greatest patriotic film maker of Bollywood. Purab aur Paschim is one such landmark movie which has been always mentioned in modern Bollywood also, if we talk about India’s contributions to modern world. For example, the movie Namasthey London. The songs of Purab aur paschim truly reflect his personal respect our Indian culture and its people. Hai preet jahan ki reet kahan, sung by Mahendra Kumar is enough to raise our feelings to our motherland.

His films also have reflected the social issues faced by the country of that particular period. Roti kapada aur Makaan was one such film that reflected the problem of unemployment of youth and many similar issues, post Indian Independence. While Kranti reflected India’s struggle for independence and people’s respect to Bharat Mata, Upkar gives the real smell of Indian soil. 1965 movie, Shaheed was one such movie from which he began his real work as a preacher of India’s truth, wisdom as well its social issues, though reflected his eternal feeling of being proud of becoming Indian citizen. “Mere rang de basanthi” song truly highlighted the feelings of Indian struggle for Independence.

As a film maker, award winning films like Be-Imaan, Sanyasi, Upkar, Purab aur Paschim and Kranthi can be listed among the best patriotic movies ever made on Bollywood screen and at this particular occasion of independence, as a true citizen, I bow before this film maker who is most apt for the addressing, ‘Bharat Kumar of India’.
