Manichitrathazhu Is 20 Year Old Now! Its Sequel To Arrive Soon!

If you ask a Keralite which is his most favourite Malayalam movie, most chances are there to get an answer, ‘Manichitrathazhu’. Not only me, many Keralites have Manichitrathazhu as their first choice. The movie was released on 1993, December 25. So, only a few months left to complete 2 decades. It looks unbelievable! 20 years! Yet most of its artists are busy in the industry now also. It was the best movie directed by Fazil. The most recent update is that its sequel is to release soon. It has been titled Gitanjali and it is directed by Bollywood and Mollywood’s favourite, Priyadarshan. Sunny will appear once again in doctor’s avatar.

Still I remember. It was my childhood when this movie got released and it ran houseful in theatres for months. Its fantasy story and the decoded message were so fresh that it pulled people to theatres. Fazil has once told in an interview to Vanitha Magazine that he got inspiration of this plot from a real life incident happened in his childhood days. He even explained that our mental thoughts are enough to chance our approach and thoughts to different things. The movie casted Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobana in main lead, supported by Nedumudi Venu, Kuthiravattam Pappu, Innocent, Thilakan, Sudheesh, Sridhar and KPAC Lalitha.

Now let me add a few more facts of this movie. Shobhana received state awards and National awards for this movie for the first time. It’s to be noted that only in rare occasions only, a non-Hindi film received National awards for popularity. Malayalam won it successively for two years – 1992 and 1993, for Sargam and Manichitrathazhu respectively. In 1993, Manichitrathazhu shared the award with Yash Chopra’s Darr too. Till then, it took 19 long years for Malayalam to win it for the third time in the name of Ustaad Hotel, last year.

Its popularity has made many other regional directors to remake this movie in their own language. Among all its remakes, Chandra Mukhi in Tamil, Rajnikanth reprising the role of Mohanlal was the most successful remake, followed by Bhool bhulayya of Hindi. This movie was directed by a Kerala director and he held its essence firmly without losing its value, as he knows most Malayalis will surely do a post mortem in his script and movie, any malpractice done can change things wrong. He didn’t change the script anywhere and even avoid the school girl’s memories to keep the suspense going on till its end. Shobhana’s role was done by another Malayali girl, Vidya Balan and it’s the dream of every Malayali actress to do Ganga’s role once again. Akshay Kumar did the role of Mohan lal. Third remake was Aapthamitra with Soundarya playing the leading role in Kannada though it was not as successful as the rest three.

It may be just co-incidental that sequel of Manichitrathazhu is to release in the 20th year celebration of this masterpiece. So, let us wait with patience to know what Sunny is doing in his new avatar, 20 years later.
