Mahabharat And It's Importance

Mahabharat is the classical epic of the Indian culture. This was written by Vedavyasa. The period of its origin is estimated to be 2000-3000 B.C. The epic gives detailed explanation to virtues and values of life. Mahabharat teaches why and how man has to lead a virtous life. The importance of Dharma (duty-bound) is well explained and established through the story. Through the article we can understand more about Mahabharat.

Mahabharat is written in eighteen chapters. It contains more than 100’000 slokas that means stanzas. Since, it has a large content of good lessons for man’s life, it is also called ‘panchama veda, or the fifth veda after Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas.

The epic is unfolded as the story of the fight between Pandavas and Kauravas to capture the kingdom of Bharat(the whole of India). The final ending is the victory of Dharama(truth) over Adharma(vices).

The opposing forces are Dhrudarashtra and his 100 children, known as the Kauravas, the eldest being Duryodhana, and Pandu and his children, Pandavas who are five, the eldest being Yudhishtira.

As the Beginning of the conflict, there was a gambling game similar to the chess, between the Kauravas and Pandavas in which the Kauravas won by cheating during the game. Even then, the Pandavas accepted defeat and were compelled to go for a secluded life in forest, according t the conditions of the game.

After the isolated life in the forest, the Pandavas returned, prepared an army and entered into a battle with the Kauravas who were then on the throne. The war was known as the Mahabharat War which is also known as Kurukhsetra War. As the Pandavas were God fearing and virtuous people, the Avatar (incarnation) of God, Sri Krishna joined the Pandavas as the pilot of their leading the Chariot. Just befor  the beginning of the war, Arjun, the second brother of Yudhishtira, of Pandavas had some doubts about fighting the war. Sri krishna cleared his doubts through his well known advice known as 'Bhagavat Gita'.

The war was won by the Pandavas and they came to power. But, realising that the wordly life is not permanent, Pandavas decided to quit the trone.

Man can get mental ability and power through believing in and worshipping God. This power will enable man for good deeds and virtues or Dharma. Only then, man's life becomes successsful. This is the message of Mahabharat.
