Now purchasing of goods has gone high, same is the case of plastics – particularly electronic equipments and plastics. Now waste processing units are scarce not only in big towns, but also in small villages. Now land has reduced considerably and residential areas are fast developing. Obviously wastes too! Best solution is to control wastes and reuse of at least a few items.

Wastes are of two types – degradable and non-degradable. Food waste, vegetables, waste of fish and meat decay easily and dissolve in soil. They belong to degradable wastes. Plastic, metals and glass never decay and hence non-degradable. They give real threat to nature too! To process waste, best method is to categorize the waste materials to degradable and non-degradable and keep them in separate waste baskets.

Never throw away plastics

In non-degradable wastes, plastics give maximum side effects. That’s the reason why plastics are strictly prohibited in echo friendly areas like hill stations, forests and zoo. Plastic containers and glass never degrades and mix with soil. So, instead of plastic bags you can use paper bags for shopping. Earlier palm leaf boxes were used by women for buying fish and vegetables from markets. Now those village scenes have disappeared. Also never throw away waste in plastic covers. It makes degradation of waste slow.

It’s not practical to avoid plastic containers in kitchen. But we can reduce their usage for sure. For water and oil, instead of buying plastic covers and bottles every time, use refill packets. Plastics with high micron can be recycled and hence use those plastics only. Also, in towns and cities, municipality and corporation hire people who take waste from homes to processing units.

Another threat is from electrical/electronic equipments- Televisons, CDs, computer, old radios etc belong to this group. So, instead of dumping them in waste, exchange them from exchange melas. Though the profit you get for purchasing new goods is small, you are serving your country and nature. Choose only eco-friendly items for your interior with star ratings. If so, they are re-usable.

Recycling degradable waste

Prepare food that’s needed only. Instead of throwing remaining food in waste bin, keep it in refrigerator and reuse if possible. According to statistics, if a family has 5 members, bio-waste produced is 2.5 kgs. If they are processed, not only you get rid of waste, but also produce fuel for your kitchen. Kitchen fuel and compost for agriculture – both can be prepared from food waste. Gas produced by compost is the fuel to light your stove. Bio gas plant and earth worm compost – both can be done by adding waste paper and other wastes too, except non-degradable items.
