LED - The Sparkling Little Stars

Light emitting diode, shortly known as LED was born in the year 1962. Now these dwarf stars have created amazing wonders in the past 50 years. This semiconductor light source was invented by a Russian, Oleg Vladimirovich Losev. In 1955, Rubin Braunstein found that diodes emit infra red radiations. In 1961, two Americans Robert Biard and Gary Pittman invented LED that emits infra red radiations when electricity was passed through. They got its patent as well.

The first LED visible to eyes are made by Nick Holonyak, Jr. in 1962 and he is known as "father of the light-emitting diode". He made the first visible spectrum LED in red. From there LED created new records of colourful luminance lights to white power lights for our interior.

Light Emitting diode, shortly known as LED is a semiconductor chip with a diode of two poles – positive and negative. When electricity is conducted, electrons from negative end pass to its positive end and when it reaches low energy levels of positive, energy is emitted and released in the form of light. The plastic cover that protects the LED acts as a reflector of light making its luminescence powerful.

LED has many advantages. It takes less power, thus reducing total power consumption. But it emits light manifold. Among all lights, LED has maximum span and it may work for 1 lakh hours or more. It has less tear and wear and emits less heat too. When an incandescent bulb burns for 1200 hours, a normal CFL has an average life span of 8000 hours.

Incandescent bulbs with filaments were popular till 80’s. They consumed a lot of energy and very soon they were replaced with fluorescent lamps. Though CFL was the best option it emits mercury when thrown to soil after use. Also, their size and pollution are other defects. But LED has less power consumption, small size and causes less pollution to atmosphere.

Now LEDs are used for lights in traffic signals and they are available in blue and white shades. It is made possible through certain chemical changes in diode. It is also used for lighting decorations as well. Now LED torches and chargers are popular. When an LED is fitted behind a powerful lens, the light is reflected many fold. Now LED is commonly used in computer monitors and televisions. Though a bit expensive, many people choose them as they are good for vision, quality as well as protect our eyes from radiation. They take less electric power as well. LED is used in television remotes also. They emit infra red radiation that is connected with television controls. It’s the same case of camera focus and lens.
