Kundan Lal Saigal- The Best Hindi Singer

Kundal Lal Saigal

Kundan Lal Saigal, the best singer of the Hindi cinema was born in a small village near Jammu on April 11, 1904. His father was an officer in the court of king Pratap Singh of Jammu & Kashmir and mother Mrs. Kaisar Kour was a prominent singer. Kundan Lal sang his first song, a religious bhajan of Mira in the court of Maharaja with the inspiration of his mother and efforts of his father at the age of 12 in 1916 and impressed the audience.

His first Guru

It may sound strange but a community singer woman was his first guru whom he used to hear standing out side her house because his mother did not allow him to go to her house, which was not considered respectable. Later when he joined Hindustan gramophone record company, he recorded the song that inspired him to become a singer in his own voice. Once his elder brother fell seriously ill and doctors advised musical therapy for him. The family appointed a music teacher who played harmonium for his brother. Kundan Lal practiced with that teacher and soon had the expertise in paying harmonium and singing efficiently.

Kundan Lal Saigal started his musical journey with Pankaj Mallik, Music Director Boral and BN Sarkar associated with New Theaters of Kolkata. It started in 1930 when he met Nripen Majumdar and requested him to provide him a chance to sing for radio. His audition was so successful that everyone present there was so impressed that he was instantly offered to sing for radio and films.

He officially joined New Theaters in 1931 and by the year 1936, he became very popular as a singer. His songs had the simplicity of Bengal, Colors of Punjab and the beauty of Awadh. He left this world in 1947 at a very young age of 43 due to illness. He did not sing more than 100-125 songs, but all his songs are considered the best by any Indian singer in the Hindi film industry. His style was later copied by almost all popular singers of the Hindi Film industry including Mukesh, Mohammad Rafi and Kishor Kumar.
