Kodaikanal - A Charming Hill Station

 

Kodaikanal is a charming hill station, located amidst the folds of verdant Pali hills is one of the most popular tranquil hill stations in India. Kodaikanal pride is the 'Kurinji-flower', which blossoms once in twelve years. The hill plantain plums and fruits are known for their taste and freshness. The hill town is famous for its educational institutions of international status. This place is with wooded slopes, enhancing waterfalls, mighty rocks and a beautiful lake.

One of the most beautiful picnic spots in Kodai is Berijam Lake, located 21-km away from the bus stand. Drinking water supplied by this lake to Periakalam town. The scenery around here is pleasant. A new boat house is constructed in 1910, however from May 1929, only some tourists were permitted to avail boat ride. Afterward they were extended to public and the tourists in 1932. The boats like Kodai boats, T.T.D.C, Carlton boats are available for hire.

Bryant Park is noted for hybrids, flowers and rafts, situated on the eastern side of the lake. There are many varieties of flowers that can be seen in a glasshouse. In the month of May, annual horticultural show is held here. Shenbaganur Museum is maintained Sacred Heart College, located about 5-Km from the lake. One of the best orchidoriums in the nation with more than three hundred species of orchids and widespread collection of birds are found here.

Pillar Rocks, in the city limits the individual can see three boulders standing along side each other vertically measuring about 122 meters height providing a panoramic view. Lord Murugan presiding in Kurinji Andavar Temple and is about 3.2-km from the lake. In Tamil literature "Kurinji" means "Hilly Region" and "Andavar" means God. From this Murugan temple, one can get a view of Palani Hills and northern plains.

Kodaikanal Lake is a wonderful man-made lake. This lake spreads out in a shape of star over 60 acres as it is set among the greenery. Boat club here offers several delight and racing trips. And Silver Cascade waterfall is located on the Ghat Road about 8-km from Kodaikanal. The Kodai Lake overflow comes down here as 180 feet high falls.
