Kamal - The Director Has Risen As A Phoenix

It was a time of late 80’s when young directors like Fasil, Kamal, Siddhique lal and a few more were believed to be the reformers of Malayalam movies. They were trend setters of early 90’s with new ideas and gave new direction to Malayalam movies. Of those directors, director Kamal was most versatile who proved successful in romantic, comedy, drama, melodrama, action and realistic movies through a string of different types of stories he told in celluloid. He reigned almost a decade in Mollywood. But with the middle of 2000’s he lost his momentum. After Perumazhakalam of 2004, he witnessed a series of flops. Even the critically well acclaimed movies like Rapakal and Karuthapakshikal, that won National awards faced disaster at box office. After Swapnakoodu and Nammal, his films were seen serious blow at box office.

Very soon, we saw the great director Kamal making movies of substandard. A few of them include Minnaminni koottam, Pacha kuthira (though innovative),  Goal  and Zameer in Hindi (remake of his own movie of 1995 Mazhayethum Mumpe). Much innovative project that Kamal made with great expectations in 2009 also bombed at the box office.

Then we saw the rise of this veteran director through Gadamma in 2011. This movie won him the best director state awards and was successful at box office too. No doubt, it was the comeback of this great director. This movie, based on a short story portrayed the sufferings of a lady who went to Saudi Arabia to work as a maid. This movie was the comeback movie of Kavya Madhavan too, after her marriage and divorce. It gave her the second state awards for the best actress too. In 2012, Swapna Sanchari – story of a Gulf Malayali told in a humorous way was released. Though not a huge success, it was appreciated by audience. Jayaram did the pivot role.

Then came the turning point of Kamal’s film career through Celluloid. It was Kamal’s homage to Daniel, who made the first Malayalam movie Vigatha Kumaran, yet got insults till his death. No doubt, Celluloid is the best movie of Kamal’s directorial career that give a lot of fine performance and golden music too. In 2013, it bagged almost all awards of Malayalam cinema including best actor, direction, movie, music and singer. It won the best Malayalam movie in National category too. So it’s sure, Kamal is back in track and we can wait for more surprises soon.

Let me conclude saying something – Gadhama and Celluloid were his magic projects and he committed them without thinking about box office. But even Kamal was surprised with its box office collection. That’s why it’s told, something we do with our heart without thinking about profits and benefits will always gain success.
