Joy Mukherji's Best Co-star - Asha Parekh Or Sadhna Shivdasani?

1960s was the era of romantic movies with some good songs in Bollywood. Obviously heroes with good looks became immensely popular. Till the rise of India’s first super star Rajesh khanna in early 1970s, many chocolate looking and romantic heroes like Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Biswajeet, Dharmendra and Joy Mukherji quite ruled the silver screen. Through the lovely screen presence, a few heroines too ruled millions of hearts. Sadhna Shivdasani. Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, Saira Bhanu, Asha Parekh and Tanuja were among those bubbly heroines of 1960s. Joy Mukherji is most remembered for his songs than his movies. O. P. Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishen have created some wonderful tunes for him. Among all heroines, his sizzling chemistry was well noticed?

“Aa jare aa zara” - this sizzling number sung by Mohd Rafi was a hot song in the 1960s. The movie is ‘Love in Tokyo’ with melodious songs of SJ. Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh created fire on screen with their romantic numbers like Aa jare aa zara, Oh mere shahi huba, Mujhe tum mil gaye, Sayanora etc though the movie was an average at box office.  Yes, Joy Mukherjee’s combination with Asha Parekh was quite popular in the mid-1960s. They worked together for the first time in 1963 movie – Phir wohi dil laya hoon which turned out to be a blockbuster. It was followed by one of the highest grossers of the year 1964 – Ziddi and Love in Tokyo (1966). They also worked together in Hum Hindustani in 1960.

Joy Mukherjee debut silver screen in the year 1960 with the romantic movie – ‘Love in Shimla’, opposite Sadhana. The movie was a big hit and the romantic hero tag got added to his name as well. It benefitted him throughout 1960s, though he acted only in lesser number of movies. ‘Ek Musafir ek hassena’ is perhaps the most memorable movie of his career and Sadhana played his heroine. O. P. Nayyar’s music also played a significant role in lifting his career through the movie. His pairing with Saira bhanu in the classic comedy – Shagird also needs special mention. Yet among all, he became popular with Asha Parekh Jodi, who has been a top star of 1960s. Before I conclude let me add one amazing fact. All the three hit movies of Joy-Asha combination (Ziddi, Love in Tokyo and Phir wohi dil laaya hoon) were directed by Pramod Chakravorty.
