Only a few actors are there who are noticed for their songs and song sequences than their acting skills. No doubt, Joy Mukherjee can be included in this group. When he died just one year ago in March 2012, a great epic belonging to an era of music faded from our memory. Though he has acted in many movies during 60’s and 70’s he is remembered most for the movies he has done when he entered Bollywood. Almost all Mukherjees of Bollywood including Rani Mukherjee, Somu Mukherjee and Rani Mukherjee are his close relatives. Ashok Kumar and his brothers are his uncles. It’s said that not even a single Hindu person exists in Bollywood who can’t be called to be Joy Mukherjee’s relative.

Joy Mukherjee is remembered most for his roles opposite Sadhana Shivdasani, with whom he debut Bollywood. He debut Bollywood in the year 1960 oppsite Sadhana in the movie ‘Love in Shimla’ which was successful at Box office. They were paired again in ‘Ek Haseena Ek Musafir’ a critically well acclaimed movies, thus proving themselves to be a successful pair in Bollywood during the early era of 60’s. O.P.Nayyar’s songs with Asha Bhosle and Mohd.Rafi’s voice proved a lot for the success of the movie. This movie and its songs fixed Joy Mukherjee as the romantic hero of Bollywood. Obviously most of his movies belong to romatic tag too. 60’s was a sweet era of melodious music, thus helping Joy Mukherjee to reach everyone’s heart as a sweet romantic hero singing melodious songs in Mohd.Rafi’s voice. Majority of his songs were sung by Mohd.Rafi too, the top male singer of 1960’s.

He was successfully paired with Asha Parekh too, of which Phir wohi dil laaya hoon was most successful. All the songs of this movie were pictured on Mukherjee and Rafi’s voice was used for this purpose. Ziddi is also a successful movie of this pair. But this pair is remembered most for ‘Love in Tokyo’ and magical songs. Shankar Jaikishen gave their best in composing the songs are the songs are till immortal, even after years. Though the movie released in 1966 failed at Box office, romantic and sizzling songs like Aa ja re aa zara still stays young and alive. Sayanora, Love in Tokyo and Mujhe tum mil gaye add extra flavours to this movie. Another memorable movie of Joy Mukherjee with hit songs is Shahird with Lakshmikanth-Pyarelal’s beautiful composition. Joy Mukherjee and saira Banu put real life in the songs like Who hai zara and Dil wil. He give extra life to the song ‘Duniya pagal hai’ too.  

No doubt, Joy Mukherjee is remembered most for his hit songs in Love in Shimla, Love in Tokyo, Shagird, Humsaaya and Ek Hasseena Ek Musafir than his hit movies during 1960’s.
