Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan is an Indian actress and politician. She was born in a Bengali family on 9th April 1948. Her father Taroon Kumar Bhaduri was a writer, journalist and stage artist in Jabalpur. Jaya Bhaduri is wife of popular film actor Amitabh Bachchan and the mother of Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Abishek Bachchan. Aishwarya Rai, former Miss World and Bollywood actress is her daughter-in-law.

She studied in St. Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal and then at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

She started her film carrier at the age of 15 under the popular filmmaker Satyajit Ray in 1963. Mahanagar was her first film. Anil Chatterjee and Madhabi Mukherjee are in central roles and she had a supporting role in this film. She starred opposite husband her husband Amitabh Bachchan in films such as Abhimaan (1973), Zanjeer (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) and Sholay (1975). She won the Filmfare award for Best Actress for the film Abhimaan. She also wrote the script of Shahenshah. She took a break in her carrier after marriage, after her appearance in film Silsila in 1981.

Jaya Bachchan returned to acting in 1998 with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Ma. Then she starred in the film Fiza in 2000 opposite Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. For this film she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work and it was considered as one of her best performances. She became the part of successful films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).

She had won many awards such as six Film Fare Awards and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1992.

She has become active in politics with the Samajwadi Party and has been a Member of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha. She became MP of Samajwadi Party in July 2006. Jaya is the Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council from July, 2004. Her another super hit film was  Tere Mere Sapne , a hindi film produced by Amitabh Bachchan's production company A.B.C.L

On January 2011, she appeared in a Bangladeshi film titled Meherjaan. In Meherjaan, Jaya Bachchan was a Bangladeshi girl who falls in love with a Pakistani army officer. Now she is acting as Vice-Chairman to A.B.C.L.
