Jaisalmer is the city located in Rajasthan state in India. It has one of the largest forts in the world. There are some Jain temples within the fort’s building, apart from Royal palace, the massive gateways and the other highlights. To visit this fort, best way is to take safari atop a beautiful decorated elephant or camel. Actually, a visit to Jaisalmer is not complete with a typical desert safari atop camel. Jaisalmer was built by Bhati Rajput ruler Rao Jaisal in 1156 AD, from where it derives it name.

This fort stands arrogantly amidst the golden extends of great Thar Desert, on Trikuta Hill, and has been many battles scene. Its huge yellow sandstone walls are an orangey lion color during the day, vanishing to honey gold as sun sets, so camouflaging the fort in yellow desert, because of this reason, it also known as ‘Golden Fort’. Jaisalmer fort, well known as ‘Sonar Quila’ by locals, is situated in the city heart and one of the most notable monuments in locality.

This fort now faces the many threats that are the outcome of increasing population pressure on it. In adequate civic amenities, derelict houses, water seepage and seismic activity around Trikuta Hill are some major concerns impacting the Fort. Not like the many other forts, this Fort has been constructed over a feeble sedimentary rock hill which makes its foundations particularly susceptible to leakage. Over the years this led to collapse of important portions of Fort like the Rani Ka Mahal or Queen’s Palace and outer boundary wall parts and lower plunging walls.

It is almost completely a waste of sandy, forming a part of Great Indian Desert. The aspect of region is that of interminable sea of the sand hills, of all sizes and shapes, a few rising to 150 feet height.  Traditionally, the main income source was the caravans’ levies. But, the Jaisalmer glory faded when Bombay emerged as the port and the trade of sea replaced the land routes. The tourism is a major industry in Jaisalmer.
