It's A Myth That R.D Is Proficient In Fast Numbers Only!

R.D. Burman, the bridge between present and past! Yes, his position in Bollywood music is exactly in the middle of two generations that link old generation music with new. Old generation music gave preference to Indian classical music while the middle generation and present cinema westernize Indian tunes and often borrow western tunes and singing styles a lot. If we look at the 1000 years of Hindi cinema, it can be said that R.D. Burman was the person who clearly gave new definition and style to Bollywood music.

If we compare his compositions with his fathers’, Shankar Jaikishen, Madan Mohal or Laxmi-Pyare compositions of 50’s and 60’s, definitely they are fast and had made use of many western instruments as well. But it doesn’t mean that he has spoiled Indian music and renovated it by giving his own new definition sets! It’s also true that his association with Asha Bhosle has given a few fast tracks like Piya tu, O haseena or Yeh mera dil. But in true means, he has given some amazing compositions purely based on Indian music. His last composition of 1942-A love story is the best instance. Even at the present era of western ‘over doze’ he was able to deliver the magical tunes of 1942-A love story with less musical instruments and preference to singers, and it invited we all to hear those songs again and again!  Yes, in true means he was an emperor of melodies too.

Let me give a few instances. Though he has made his wife sing fast cabaret numbers, he has given his sister-in-law Lata Mangeshkar a few magical tunes purely based on Indian classical music. Songs of Amar Prem and Parichay are the best examples. Can anyone feel the beats of western instruments while hearing Raina beeti jaaye or Bada natkhat hai of Amar Prem or Beete na bitaye of Parichay? Definitely not! How beautifully has Kishore Kumar sung ‘Yeh kya hua’ and ‘Chingari’ in Indian tunes and style.

It’s also true that all magical fast numbers of Kishore da exclusively belong to R.D. too. Yet they together have given – Dil aisa kise of Amamanush, Mere naina of Mehbooba and Kehna hai of Padosan. So, in true means, R.D was a genius who was able to handle both Indian tunes and western tunes equally, thus accumulating fans all over the world of all genes.
