IPL Season Six Is Unbalanced

This year, it is the sixth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). One thing that has mostly gone unnoticed is the schedule of the tournament. One has to admit it that the schedule of the Indian Premier League is indeed a lop-sided affair. It has to be a bit balanced.

It is evident from the fact that when a team like Mumbai Indians has played almost four matches Chennai Super Kings has played only a couple of matches. It gives loads of exposure to a specific team and helps in keeping the form of the players going. But this cannot be termed as an advantage of sketching up the schedule.

Until Saturday, April 13, Kings XI Punjab had played just a couple of matches, while Royal Challengers Bangalore had played as many as five matches – more than twice what Kings XI Punjab had played. Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils and played four matches until then.

It is one thing the organizers of the event should take into account. If there is such a big difference between the numbers of matches a certain team plays, the itinerary should be drawn taken this into account in the next season.

Allowing one team too many matches can help to keep the players in form. However, a lot of physical strain cannot be dismissed either. With the amount of cricket being played increasing so much, it can hardly give players any rest. To add to that they have to travel from one place to another.

The teams that get lesser matches to play during the same period, however, have an advantage and know where they stand in the points table. The picture is also clearer for them as to how many matches they need to win from there on so that they can keep themselves alive in the tournament.

But this cannot be termed as an advantage. If the organizers have to keep cricket in the front and see to it that the fans get real entertainment, equal number of matches for all the teams (with not more than a couple of matches here or there for adjustment) is a must.

This does not make the picture clear as all the teams could be losing and winning matches in the same time span. That will make cricket the winner.

(These number of matches played and mentioned here are taken into account until Saturday, April 13).
