IPL- Review Of Season 4

This was the fourth edition of the IPL held in India. The tournament was hosted in India and the opening and closing ceremonies were held in M.A. Chidambaram stadium, Chennai.  The season ran from 8 April to 28 May 2011. This season the number of teams in the league went from eight to ten with the additions of the Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. With the introduction of 2 new teams, a new ten-team format was created. This new format consists of 74 matches and was introduced as retaining the previous format would result in 94 matches, significantly greater than the 60 matches from the previous edition, where teams compete in a double round robin tournament. The knockout stage was changed to a playoff format.

CSK and the RCB were the toppers in the group with 19 and 18 points each. The first match was held on April 8 between CSK and KKR which CSK won by 3 runs after they put on a modest total of 153 and succeeded in restricting KKR to 151. CSK and KXIP played out an interesting match on 13th April where CSK scored 188 and KXIP managed to overcome the total with some astute batting by their batsmen. The next few matches were average to say the least.

One-sided affairs and low scores marked this edition. The match between RCB and RR on 19th April was washed out and abandoned due to rain. DDR posted a huge total of 231 on 23rd April against KXIP which DDR won by 29 runs. However DDR lost next match against RCB when RCB managed to chase down a total of 160 with only 3 balls to spare. Kochi being the new kid on the block did not fare all too well. They won against DDR on 3rd may by 7 wickets but lost their match to DC by 55 runs after a poor showing by their batsmen wherein they were bowled out for a meager 74 runs.

But it wasn’t all that bad as they had victories against MI where they chased down 182 runs and also CSK. The first qualifier was won by CSK against RCB where they chased down a target of 175 due to a knock of 73 runs by player of the match Suresh Raina. MI beat KKR in the eliminator to win a chance to play against RCB who had lost the 1st qualifier. The second eliminator between RCB and MI was a one-sided contest as RCB successfully defended their total of 185 which was possible due to a batting blitzkrieg by Chris Gayle who was in top form the whole tournament and one of the main reasons for RCB reaching the finals. But he was a silent spectator in the finals as he watched his team helplessly lose to a spirited team performance by CSK with yet another star performance by Murali Vijay who scored 95 from 47 balls and deservingly won the player of the match award. Chris Gayle was named as the tournament's best player. He scored 608 runs in twelve innings- the most in the tournament – as well as picking up eight wickets. Lasith Malinga set a new record for most wickets taken within an Indian Premier League season, claiming 28 wickets during the campaign.
