International Midwives Day : Midwives Leading The Way With Quality Care

5th May is being observed as International Midwives Day every year across the globe on international level to commemorate and spread the awareness about the contribution of midwives in the society and towards the patients all across the globe. The day is celebrated with extreme enthusiasm and joy in more than 50 countries around the globe. Every year the day is celebrated with a specific theme and this year the theme is- “Midwives leading the way with quality care”.

 

If statistics are to be believed, every year about 3, 50,000 women are dying because of pregnancy hazards or during child birth phase. About 2 million new born babies are dying just after their birth or within 24 hours of their birth. On an average, about 2.6 million of still birth cases are happening globally. Therefore, through partnership with midwives, about 56% of these can be prevented.

 

Midwives are the main caregivers for every woman and their new born during the pregnancy, labour, childbirth and in the post-delivery phase. Midwives work very hard around the world to protect mothers and their families in receiving the quality of care they deserve for a healthy life.

 

International Midwives Day is an occasion for every midwife to think about may others who are included in the profession. The day also gives an opportunity to midwives to make new contacts within and outside the midwifery, while spreading the knowledge about the work that midwives do for the world.

 

There is critical shortage of skilled and energetic midwives globally; hence it’s mandatory to achieve the needs of the health system. There are various reasons such as insufficient training facility, poor workforce planning and management, low quality education system, no precautions measures for midwives from HIV/AIDS and many more because of which various countries are facing the shortage of skilled midwives.  

 

Midwives play a contributory role to introduce women to health system while ensuring that women and their babies should receive proper and continuous care during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the other important days and weeks after birth. On this International Midwives Day, let’s take out a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the commitment and dedication of midwives in delivering frontline healthcare services.
