Indian Arts

 

Many people mistake Indian arts for paintings from India. Though it includes Indian paintings, it has a broader meaning and it refers to many other things such as Indian music, Indian dance, architecture, sculptures, paintings, crafts, photography, etc. You need to study about each one of them deeply if you want to know more about Indian arts and Indian culture.

 

The Indian handicrafts are famous all over the world. The wood craft, stone craft, bamboo and cane craft, horn and bone craft, glass craft and leather craft are the types of Indian handicrafts. Wood carvings are done in India for many centuries. A piece of wood is shaped and decorated to form beautiful objects. Teak, sal, oak and mahogany are used to carve and sometimes sandalwood and rosewood are also used though they are very expensive. Boxes, pen stands, idols and other craft items are made out of wood.

 

The paintings of ancient India are seen in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora. The miniature paintings of Mughal period are seen in Mughal architecture. Madhubani paintings, Tanjore paintings, Mysore paintings, Indian folk paintings are other types of Indian arts. The Indian painter M F Hussain is called as the Picasso of India. Some of the famous paintings of India are Lady Lost in Thought, Shakuntala, Damayanti Talking to a Swan all by Raja Ravi Varma, Bharat Mata by Abanindranath Tagore, Lady with Lamb by Hemen Majumdar and Jesus Christ, Sri Chaitanya and Radha Krishna by Jamini Roy.

 

Indian dances are other forms of Indian arts. The dances of India are of many types namely Bharatnatyam, Kathakali, Odissi, Kuchupudi, Chhau Dance, Mohiniattam, folk dances, Sattriya, Bhangra dance, Dandiya dance and Manipuri classical dance. Some of the Indian classical dancers are Mallika Sarabhai, Sonal Mansingh, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Shovana Narayan, etc.

 

The Indian music is another form of Indian arts which is playing an important part in the life of the people. The two important classical musics of India are Hindustani music and Carnatic music. The other folk musics are Bihu of Assam, Bhangra, Dandiya, Ganasangeet, Uttarkhandi music, Ghana, Lavani, Rabindra Sangeet, Rajasthani music, etc. Film music, dance music, hip hop music, Indi-pop music and rock music are famous among people.

 

Indian photography is focused at capturing the essence of India and there are many renowned photographers such as Daboo Ratnani, Gautam Rajyadhyaksha, Vikram Bawa and Subi Samuel. Many awards such as the Indian Habitat Center Photography Fellowship Awards, Ramnath Goenka India Press Photo Awards, The Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open Photography Awards, Wills Lifestyle Fashion Award, and Toto Funds the Arts Photography Awards, TPOTY Awards and Sports Journalists Federation of India’s Indian Sports Journalism Awards are given to the eminent photographers.

 

There is no culture in India without Indian arts as the Indian arts are themselves the reflection of the life and lifestyle of the people of India. Many art clubs are launched all over India to create an interest among people in these Indian arts. The government of India is taking various measures to promote the Indian art and many awards are given to the people who excel in any of these art forms.
